Two Calves and Some Mischief

Prancing…

Here’s a story about two calves and some mischief. Don was out yesterday throwing some hay to the cows in the winter housing while Chase and Smokey pranced and played. They are so adorable when they run and chase each other! I say “prance” because they kind of move like deer…. except more cow-like ha! They sprint around in circles and it often looks like they will ram through the fences but then they stop right as soon as they get to it! They leap up and butt heads and moo like sheep. haha. For real, calves moo and sound like sheep! “Meeehhhh”, Its the absolute best.

All Was Well Until…. Mischief

All was well until Smokey (bottom of pic) felt so free during his prancing and sprinting and leaping that he leaped RIGHT THROUGH the barbed wire fence! And sure enough, right behind him came Chase. Bloop! Right through the fence after him!

A Little Something About Mischief, I mean, Chase…

Let’s pause in this story to tell you a little about Chase. Chase was originally named Rookie when he first came to the farm in March this year from Bellbrook Farms. He was so precious…. would ya just look at him…. awwwwwww……..

Five minutes after this photo, Rookie was OUTA THERE! Don and the kids took the trailer back to the rental place and when they got back Chase was nowhere to be found! Don drove down the driveway and found him right at the edge of our fence next to the road and…. BLOOP! Out he went! Don CHASED (get it?) him down the road…. he CHASED him down through the neighbors properties, he CHASED him through horse pastures, he CHASED him through the woods…. until finally he CHASED him into someone else’s cow pasture….. and Rookie thought he found his forever home… grazing with a herd of Black Angus who pushed, shoved and sniffed him relentlessly. Poor guy. He was so afraid! He needed his Momma! We didn’t even get a chance to say hello!

This is The Day Don Became a Cowboy….

Here is Don….. allllll the way across our neighborhood, in someone else’s pasture… with a bunch of Black Angus cattle…. CHASING our new calf. Needless to say, Rookie’s name was changed to Chase in that moment. After calling the owner of the herd of cattle, we all decided to leave Chase with the herd for a few days. The farmer came to feed his cows and pinned up Chase for us. Don whipped out the lasso and brought him on home! He’s so dreamy….

Back to Two Calves and Some Mischief…

So now that you know a thing or two about Chase…. hopefully this story has a new flavor and depth of understanding when we say, Chase chased Smokey right out of the fence! Of course he did! Little stinker-pot! It’s ok though, because Don is now a cowboy and he and the kids ran out and corralled them back into our pasture. Marybell helped by calling them in, which is really precious that they both responded to her Momma Moo call!

Tightening the Barbed Wire

So despite Don’s miserable head cold, he woke up first thing in the morning to redo the barbed wire fence in the freezing cold weather. Now everyone is home and safe and the calves can get right back to their mischief…. within the newly fenced pasture of course.

There’s never a dull moment on the Homestead. Its perfect.
